The Kodiaks Cubs Club has just finished its first season an initiative allowing the Camrose Kodiaks junior hockey team to get involved and give back to the community. A season is in the books in the literal sense as the goal for the Cubs Club is for the players to be active in the schools weekly promoting physical activity and literacy outside school hours. Students worked toward reaching a goal of 12 hours of reading and 12 hours of physical activity with a reward on completion. Each successful student received a prize package including a program T-shirt, string bag, free Wok Box meal, CrossFit Camrose pass, free game of bowling at Tabbs, and Kodiak tickets. The prizes were made possible by participating local sponsors! Kodiaks Associate Coach Nigel Dube says, “Being the first year it was an overwhelming success, students worked very hard toward their goals and we even had some students who challenged themselves to get multiple hour logs done.” Success was proven by students reaching over 2900 hours of physical activity and reading! Players contributed to the school and community by being positive role models to the students, building relationships and having a consistent presence in the school. “Without community support junior hockey does not exist, it is our responsibility to get out and be active in the community. We want to teach life lessons to our players setting them up for life outside the game; what they learn visiting these students on a weekly basis goes well beyond any game played on the ice” explained Dube.
During the visits the players would work with the students on a variety of subjects, projects, and activities. In the first year the program focused at Sparling and Chester Ronning Elementary schools with Grade 3-5 students. The program created win-win situation as the players learned much from the students as well. Cale Chalifoux, a veteran defenseman who was acquired heading into the 2017-18 season enjoyed his time each week in the schools, “the Introduction of the Kodiaks Cubs Club this year was a huge success for the students and the players. It was enjoyable going to the elementary schools every Wednesday and learning something new from the kids, while encouraging them and emphasizing the importance of reading and being physically active. We built a relationship with these youth over the course of the year that was both positive and impactful. The first few interactions with the students quickly taught everyone a lot about how influential we are on the young people in the community. We also learned how important it is to approach everything we do with a positive attitude and to be a good role model to create a lasting impression on these kids who admire us and hope to be in our shoes someday.”
We would like to thank our Cubs Club sponsors: D&D Auto Sales, Midas, CrossFit Camrose, WokBox, ID Apparel, Business IQ, Rotary Club – Day Break, Zetsen Master Builders. Outside of the Kodiaks Cubs Club the players continued to be involved in as many community events as possible. These events included playing basketball against the special Olympic team, visiting rural schools, Kid Sport, adding six new little free libraries to town, Skills Day, and Teddy Bear Toss, to name a few! The Kodiaks organization is proud to be involved in the community throughout the entire year as we look to give back to the community that gives us so much!
